Show Notes For Podcasting

The blog GothamCast: A New York City Experience is a good example of show notes for a podcasting blog. It contains a summary of what each show is about, it has a captivating title (other than episode number) which is important to attract new audience, it has on the top of the blog a list of popular/related words and phrases for easy search access, it also includes written links mentioned in the podcast for easier accessibility of the listeners (as it can be difficult for the audience to memorize all this information), the images complement the podcast, and lastly it contains a MP3 download button for direct access to the podcast.
A blog that could use some work on good show notes is Internet Business Mastery. Even though it provides an image to visually enhance the podcast and provides a brief summary of each episode, it does not provide an MP3 download easy access link right away, it has it all the way to the end instead of at the beginning (this is important for audience accessibility) and it includes a Click Here link which it is advised not to use. See below.

“Good show notes enhance your show by offering a convenient outline of the contents of each episode. A good title and well-thought out show notes will bring new visitors to your site and entice people to listen and subscribe to your podcast.”

PIB Assignment

It is very important that a blog includes some of the new social media tools as a part of the design. As new social media tools are born, these tools need to be integrated accordingly to the blog’s genre. The Digital Podcast Blog, has a design that includes not only some of the appropriate social media tools for the audience of this blog, but also accessibility (user friendly). The page of the blog post offers the number of listeners, this is important because it provides the listener with an idea of how many other listeners are following that particular podcast. It also includes video for some of the blogs and a comment section for each blog and/or podcast to encourage audience participation.
The audience for this blog is people who is interested in the latest digital news through either a blog or podcast. The blog’s design reflects the audience of Digital Podcast. The color provides harmony to the blog in combination with the three column design. And the headlines that this blog uses for its posts and podcasts add to the accessibility to find the latest news in digital media through a search engine. Its design provides a pleasant experience for its audience.
KUOW.ORG 94.9 FM is the host of The Conversation with Ross Reynolds. This site hosts a local public radio station that includes The Conversation, a radio program about local news. The home page offers an easy access to the most new radio/internet tools like, Listen Live or In Demand. It provides a brief summary of the themes discussed in that particular podcast/program. This makes it easier for the audience to find or to listen to specific subjects without having to listen to the entire podcast. The colors blend very nice with the radio waves look alike design. It provides information on how to contact the program and station, however it doesn’t offer a section to comment after each subject touch during that program which can be a issue of argument among some of the listeners who like to comment about a particular subject. It also offers tips to the podcast audience and other helpful information about the other programs offer through KUOW.
Some suggestions for this podcasting host site is to incorporate social media tools (it has a Facebook account, but doesn’t show on this site), Twitter, MySpace and some video/news as well as a section for comments can be helpful for the audience of The Conversation.

Podcast for Individual Blog/Changes
After reading the materials (books and class blog), I thing I will definitely make may blog a lot.
* Change the name and URL for my blog. The reasoning behind it, is that my current blog’s name “tales from the heart” can sound like a romantic/drama name and not like a blog for Latin America Children’s Tales.
* Change the design. Even though the current design can look like a blog for children, I think that it has to reflect the Latin American aspect of it and the characters of the tales. I will change the design by adding some of the different characters from the tales (Landes, cave boy, beavers, Bird, Chady/is like a fairy etc.), make it colorful for children.
* Incorporate images to the podcast. Since some of the podcast are long (about 15 min.) In order for children to follow, it needs some kind of a visual aid. I will add few images to the podcasts, only few as a base, so that they can still have the room to use their imagination.
* Incorporate the Spanish section since it is the most spoken language in Latin America. This will add another type of audience , like children that are learning Spanish as a second language and Spanish speaking audience. I will incorporate a Spanish section for podcasts that I will translate.
* It is important to provide an overview to the audience about what the story is about. This has to be catchy, a description that will motivate the audience to listen to the podcast. I will add a description for each podcast and the time length (with an image, this will help the description).
* Sometimes the part about the author can also be important for both the English and Spanish audience. I will translate this part.

Podcast Resources
If you decide to enter to the creation, production and distribution of you own podcast show, it is important to have a better understanding of the copyright law. Since I decided to take on this task, I found a couple of resources and news.
Cpyright 2.0 Show: This show offers the latest news of what is happening in regards of copyright.
Podcasting Legal Guide: This guide offers useful information that can help you to avoid infridgement, however it only offers podcasting guidance according to the USA copyright law.

Class Reflection #6
Before the industrial revolution, making a copy of a document or book was not an illegal issue, at the contrary it was a carrier. The act of copying was an act of recording data and make improvements. According to James Griffing in The Rise of the Digital Technology ” Meritocracy”: Legal Rules and Their Impact, “In regard to written works, this culminated in the development of the ‘Scriptor’. The Scriptor was an individual who was skilled in making immaculate and precise copies of the text in pre-existing works. The scriptor became an important individual because of the difficulty in making copies of works, but also he could add extra graphical elements additional to the original text. Again, the more skilled the Scriptor in using the technology available at his disposal, the more successful the Scriptor was likely to be”.
If a beautiful piece of art was created as a result of copy/added material (that back then was not illegal), then this means that as a result of copyright law, this will no longer be possible. This means that a piece of art created by an individual artist, will only offer the beauty created by one author, but how many wonderful pieces have been created as a result of the addition from other authors to the same piece of art?

What defines beauty?
Side Note: There are many wonderful pieces of music if added to a good quality podcast program, together they make a wonderful piece of audio, however many of this music is copyrighted. Therefore, sometimes it is easier to create your own music, just to avoid infringement or to pay high fees to use a copyrighted piece of music.

Podcast Resources Week 5
There is nothing like creating your content and see it published and available to the entire world! I cannot described this feeling (yeah, I am a writer and I cannot find the right words). This has been a dream come true for me. My mission was to find out how and where to posts my podcast/short stories. Today I found Podbean, it took me two minutes to sign up and to have my first short story posted!
I also found out that I can created may own sounds, special effects and music, just by using a key board and my imagination. Audacity has tools that makes it even easier. These are the tools that I liked the most:
Echo
Noise Removal
Normalize (for when I messed up)
Change speed
Fade in
Fade out
My podcast has many sound effects and music, so I had to add new audio tracks which helped me to delete, move and add sounds or music without messing up the other tracks.

Reflection Class Week 5
Even though I was not able to attend the class, I reviewed many of the materials posted on this week class notes.
I learned that one way to be able to publish/post many of the short stories I have written, WetPaint can be a great web hosting resource. I can even use this as a web for other writers who may want to share their stories as well (even in other languages).
I also learned about other podcasting hosts like the MLB. This made me think about Obama, I’m not sure if he has a podcast program, I know that he uses YouTube, but I wonder about podcasting. I can download his postcast and listen to them on my way to school, gym, work etc.
On another note, I missed the lecture from the guest speaker, Jyotsna Natarajan from Amazon. I wish that we could have her lecture via podcast, well maybe that’s something to think about?
